Building a Rapport with your Students...

Another week has passed and another week is starting! I can't believe February is basically over! Where has the time gone? This school year has been my most challenging school year yet, but there is one thing that helps me get me through each day.

When I go to work, my students are my main priority. You spend just as much time with your students as their parents/guardians do during the school year and it is important for your students to know that you care about them. Building a positive/good rapport with my students will and has always been my top priority when starting a new school year. Having a good rapport with each and everyone one of my students was one thing that I told myself I would always work hard to achieve. Allowing yourself to get to know your students along with your students being able to get to know you makes a huge impact on your learning environment. We, as teachers are human and have things that happen in our personal lives and it is ok for us to communicate that with our students and show them that life is not perfect but what matters is how we overcome the bump in the road and how we can lean on the people in our lives to help us. Connecting with your students allows them to feel comfortable, safe and important before even stepping into your classroom and in my opinion that is a win already.

Some ways to improve your rapport with your students!

  • Know your students names.

  • Actively listen to how they feel without responding right off the bat.

  • Be honest with them.

  • Be Patient.

  • Be Understanding.

  • Do Not Judge.

  • Try and remember what they may be doing over the weekend and ask about it!

  • Remember, they are human and not every day is going to be a good day, but we can find the good in everyday!
