"If they can't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn."

April is Autism Awareness Month. This encourages everyone to take measures to raise awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism stands out in a classroom setting, but barely anyone talks about Autism in a physical education setting which is why it is so important to know your students inside and out.

Physical Education is actually super beneficial and needed for students with Autism. Autism can affect a child's muscle strength and muscle tone which can limit their gross and fine motor skills.

So how do we include students with Autism in our PE class?
  • Presume competence: Do not assume that a child with autism is not interested in sports or fully capable of participating. Set realistic goals for the individual student. Allow the student to ask for help if they need it.

  • Visual Cues

  • Brief and Clear Instructions

  • Address Sensory Challenges

  • Use Special Interest Rewards
